Today marks the start of our final week here in Nicaragua and we were ready to go this morning! All the clinics had a successful day. The pediatric group moved to a new clinic: Tesoros de Dios where they are helping with physical therapy, schooling, occupational therapy, and equine therapy or hippotherapy! Today's highlight is the Aldo Chavarria Prosthetic and Amputee group!
At the Aldo Chavarria amputee gym we work with a prosthetic inpatient group of about 7 patients and also see patients who come in as outpatient 3 times a week for prosthetic training. Our days consist of group exercises, functional mobility training, manual therapy to assist with limited range of motion, neuromuscular re-education, balance and gait training. The patients are a lovely group of men and women who are so happy to work with us to become as strong and confident as they can as they make this new transition.
We are happy to have Julie join us this week as we learn so much more about prosthetics and the best way to meet our patients' needs. We hope to make a difference on how they undergo pre and prosthetic therapy and training for their best possible outcome!
We look forward to the rest of our final week here in NI, including two teams going to a local university to teach medical students!
